What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the capacity of a computer or machine to exhibit intelligent behavior, which is synonymous to humans’ decision making and their ability to learn new information. AI is used in several fields, such as, psychology, computer science, and engineering. The purpose of AI is to create computer models that can efficiently exhibit the cognitive processing abilities of humans. Artificial intelligent researchers agree that computers and the human brain operate on similar general principles. For example, both the human brain and computers have a limited capacity in which it stores information. Furthermore, the human brain and computers both can compare symbols and make decisions based off of those comparisons.

- Cognitive Artificial Intelligence recently emerged as a discipline that integrates aspects of computer science and psychology to improve people's interaction with complex machines. At the NICI this is practiced as the study of cognitive models from the perspectives of human factors and artificial intelligence. The aim is to prepare for the future of user-centered computing environments.

- The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) (formerly the American Association for Artificial Intelligence) is a nonprofit scientific society devoted to advancing the scientific understanding of the mechanisms underlying thought and intelligent behavior and their embodiment in machines.
- The field of cognitive science overlaps AI. Cognitive scientists study the nature of intelligence from a psychological point of view, mostly building computer models that help elucidate what happens in our brains during problem solving, remembering, perceiving, and other psychological processes. One major contribution of AI and cognitive science to psychology has been the information processing model of human thinking in which the metaphor of brain-as-computer is taken quite literally.
